Twerk for a new feminism
Cherish Menzo, the Dutch dancer and choreographer, subverts the biblical figure of Jezebel, the all-seducing, pernicious symbol of luxury, in order to denounce the hyper-sexualisation of women in 90’s rap and hip-hop videos. In a captivating manner, the artist abolishes the various stereotypes and fantasies and deconstructs the image-based codes associated with the “Video Vixens”, the name given to black women whose shaking hips are put at the service of virile male rappers. How is it possible to re-appropriate our own image? With her long, claw-like nails, Cherish Menzo boldly pushes the art of the twerk to abstraction. Performed across much of Europe, this solo work takes on the form of a visceral ode to emancipation.
The anti-racism movement is not just about one issue, there is many issues and they're layered
