Reviving the healing power of ancestral practices
Jolie Ngemi probes into her Congolese roots in search of its spiritual practices and magic. Animism continues to play an important part in Congolese society but, faced with the influence of Christianity, imposed during the colonial period, its expression is little more than a taboo shadow of its former self. With a firm conviction of the important role these cultures play as reference points in a world in crisis, Jolie Ngemi seeks to remind us of their beauty and healing powers. She breathes new life into the Nkisi which, in lingala, her mother tongue, means both remedy and witch. By means of her rapturous, frenzied dancing, she plunges us into the kingdom of the Nkisi women. In times gone by, these mighty women were the mediators of the occult and secret counsellors to the king!
