A sparkling water odyssey. Cheers!
Accompanied by the musician Frank Wienk, the German director Julian Hetzel and the South African-Swiss performer Ntando Cele bring us a hybrid experience centred around SPAfrica. The latter is a bottled drinking water imported into Europe from sub-Saharan Africa as a luxury item, “the first empathy drink in the world”. For despite being ethically debatable and rather disturbing, SPAfrica is undeniably sparkling and fresh. Via this mineral water and its whole, ridiculous existence, Julian Hetzel et Ntando Cele question, in a deft and ironic way, how, within the confines of the international art market, the cultural context and identity of the protagonists have become precious resources for value creation. Has traumatism become the art world’s new gold ?
