Mutating dances
Catol Teixeira, a revelation at the Festival d’Avignon in 2023, explores the intimate heritage which has left its mark on his body. He does so by means of a deeply unsettling dance form, nourished by gestures from classical and contemporary dance, as well as circus. Formerly a ballet dancer in Rio, he clashes, whether in the pointe or tiptoe position, in the air, latex-bound or playing around with wigs, the various assignations imposed on him, thereby enabling him to reclaim his identity. Drawing upon his native Brazil and the history of dance, right up to the figure of Nijinsky’s Faun, his body, inhabited by ghosts from the past, resonates with the echoes of past memories, both fond and traumatic. Clashes Licking is a ballet imbibed with queer tenderness. With its indifference to norms, and imperviousness to all forms of prejudice, it is an ode to metamorphoses.
