The Vertiginous Story of Orthosia
Joana Hadjithomas, Khalil Joreige
[Lebanon / France]

A buried history
In this unique performance, which premiered in Brussels at the 2024 Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Lebanese filmmakers and artists Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige revive memories of a lost city. The latter becomes a symbol for the marks left by history and the infinite number of migrations that humanity has been witness to. It all begins in northern Lebanon, in Nahr el Bared, a refugee camp that was hastily constructed in response to the need to accommodate Palestinian families fleeing the Nakba that occurred in 1948. Years later, in 2007, the camp was destroyed due to the outbreak of war between the Lebanese army and an Islamist group. It was during this episode that the first remains of Orthosia, an ancient Roman city buried by a tsunami in 551 CE, appeared. This dizzying performance, with all its (dis)continuities, upheavals and regenerations, plunges us, abruptly, into a past that is particularly close to the present.
