Exiled voices
The political and poetic gesture that the director Mariam Montero brings to the stage is that of enabling the voices of migrant artists from Cuba to be heard. The first chapter in a forthcoming trilogy, this solo, written and performed by her, questions the condition of mixed-race women in Cuba, her native island. In her work, each solo echoes that of a Cuban female visual artist, thereby enabling these little-heard female voices to ring out. Amidst a candle-lit stage, she weaves a five-part dramatical poem, blending visual art, projected images and festive or sacred costumes. Set to the yoruba rhythms of West Africa, this incandescent performance looks at complaint in a different way – that of a cry of revolt, the raw memory of a faltering land.
