Part-Gorgon, part-mermaid
Mami Wata, the African goddess of water, is blessed with beauty of a monstrous kind that only the most fascinating of creatures possess. This half-woman, half-mermaid creature is associated with seduction and death, and rules over the underworld of humanity. Betty Tchomanga, the gifted young French-Cameroonian performer, who has worked with Alain Buffard and Marlène Monteiro Freitas, tackles this mythological figure in a solo which is transcended by music, the disconcerting modulation of her voice and the incessant constraints of movement. Set to a pulsating soundtrack of hypnotic electro sounds and beats stemming from traditional African music, the dancer focuses her attention upon the repetition of an archaic motif, that of the vertical jump. A virtuoso exponent of this form of release-inducing trance, she conjures up a feeling of freedom at its most pure.
Betty Tchomanga est de ces interprètes inoubliables, (...) elle marque son territoire de danse avec éclat
