In search of India’s lost voice
The Indian artist Mallika Taneja sees art as “a necessary ally in the struggle for justice, equality and freedom”. Since her solo piece Be Careful, followed by Allegedly (performed at Arts & Humanités in 2020 and 2021 respectively), she has continued to explore the way in which bodies raise questions about the public space. In her latest piece Do you know this song ?, Mallika Taneja changes tack and delves into her own past in search of a lost voice. In the course of her introspection, she stumbles across a story and a few songs. What has become of this melody from the past? Navigating a path between the doldrums of loss and grieving, she sets out to find the intimate song of a lost life… She invites the audience to reconnect with this forgotten chorus, and to hum it together in order to breathe new life into it.
