Degenderising Abidjan nights

Nadia Beugré plunges deep into the outlandish heart of Ivory Coast nights, and shares with us the everyday lives of several members of Abidjan’s transgender community, the city where she grew up. Hairdressers by day, flamboyant divas by night, they live on the fringes of a society which rejects them. They support each other via a tightly-knit underground network of solidarity and conjure up a dance form of their own, shaped by voguing and the coupé-décalé. In Prophétique, Nadia Beugré, a performer in productions by Alain Buffard and Boris Charmatz, brings us a much-awaited new work which will be touring to major festivals in Europe. It promises to unveil the beauty and power of those who, irrespective of the different labels assigned to them, have the courage to invent their own lives!
